Jothi Mani : Giving children the route to a better life

JothiMani, from southern Tamil Nadu never had it easy in life. Being born into a family that was not economically well to do, JothiMani’s mother had high aspirations for her daughter, but she struggles to meet her children’s needs due to her poor financial and family conditions.

Jothi Mani’s mother got married at her young age to a man from her village where she struggled to conceive a child, her husband divorced stating the fact she is barren and can’t bring an heir to him. After a while, she was made to marry a hearing impaired man from her adjacent village, where the couple had two children, Jothi Mani and a son.

Jothi Mani’s father an alcoholic and drug addict was working as daily wager. Due to his acute drinking habits, he passed away in a cardiac arrest.

From then, JothiMani’s mother single handily has been upbringing her children. She works as a daily wager to support her family. JothiMani the eldest child from the young age, has been matured enough to understand her family situation and had a aspiration to excel well in her studies. Her mother illiterate, she struggles to cope up with her studies as she is left with none to clarify her doubts.

Rural Institute of Community Health, offered qualitative supplementary education to marginalised children through evening tuitions , Jothimani has been enrolled in the evening tuitions where she is been excelling academically as well as in extra- curricular activities such as sports , painting . She has been part of the evening tuitions for 3 years now where she shown great interest in learning the native language Tamil.

In a recent competition, she won two medals in sports i.e. water filling and running. Jothimani , now stands in a brim with self confidence and stands a role model to her fellow children in school .
